‘The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are intersex, transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls.
Helms explained: ‘The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The beautiful trans flag was first created in 1999 by trans woman Monica Helms. The particular colors used were because they’re the colors of bear fur.
His friend Paul Witzkoske then used Byrnes’ original sketch to then create the Bear Pride flag we know today.
At the time he was studying for an undergraduate degree in psychology and was working on a project exploring and discussing bear culture.
